Hello, my name is Susie Verity.
I live in the beautiful South Shropshire countryside with my husband Nige and daughter Georgia.
The Wenlock Edge is an inspirational place to live and work. However, a lot of my inspiration comes from listening to and watching people. Having been brought up in Scotland, having Irish blood and having an ear for dialects has helped in writing many of my poems.
I have been writing poetry for as long as I can remember. I love language and the power which use of the right words can have. This passion for language extends into my other role as a speech and language therapist working with children.
My first personal poem came about because I was unable to find a suitable birthday card for my sister’s fiancé, so I made my own and began writing verses about him. He was big in stature and even bigger in personality. The response the poem received, not only from him, but his friends and family, was amazing, and I was hooked.
I write poems for any occasion, but particularly for significant birthdays, weddings, retirements and leaving do’s.
Generally, the wedding poems I’ve written to date have been adjuncts to the best man’s speech. However, more and more brides are now looking to say a few words about their new spouse, so I’ve done these too.
A poem also makes a lasting, and most touching “thankyou” gift for the mothers/parents of the bride and groom.
My aim is to encapsulate the personality of the person, or couple, in a way that expresses exactly how you feel about them. My poems err on the humorous side. It has to be said, however, that they have been known to move their recipients (and the audience) to tears!
